Each October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) to raise awareness about disability employment issues. This year’s theme is “The Right Talent, Right Now!”.
According to recent statistics from the Department of Labor, 1 in 4 Americans has a disability- making People with Disabilities the largest minority group. Still, the unemployment rate for People with Disabilities is 7.2% vs. 3.6% for People without Disabilities.
To ensure that federal contractors are proactively seeking outreach to, and not discriminating against, Individuals with Disabilities, OFCCP has started Section 503 Focused reviews this year. Additionally, federal contractors are required to give all applicants pre- and post-hire the opportunity to Self-ID disability status. Recently, OFCCP requested a few changes to the original disability Self-ID form to provide additional information to applicants in the hope that more applicants would voluntarily complete the document. Since 2014 when the initial requirement to request disability self-identification of disability status, participation has been low.
